How to Clean Hearing Aids

Hearing aids are a pretty significant investment. So, it’s important to keep them in top shape by cleaning them regularly. Unlike most electronics, the conditions that hearing aids have to operate in is far from ideal, given that they are usually in contact with the inside of the ear canals, where they are subjected to moisture and earwax. Regular cleaning and routine maintenance provided by a professional will ensure the various parts of a hearing aid will last for a long time. Before cleaning a hearing aid, make sure to keep the right tools on hand to make the process easier.

Cleaning ITE Hearing Aids

When cleaning in-the-ear models, follow these steps:

– Clean the openings in the device, including all the microphone ports using a brush provided by the hearing aid manufacturer or with a soft-bristle toothbrush. Hold the device with the opening that is being cleaned facing downward so loose particles can fall out of the device instead of staying lodged in.

– Use a hook or wax pick to clear the rest of the dust or grime that may not have come out with the brush.

– Finally, wipe the entire device with a dry cloth or issue. This will help remove any debris from the hearing aid device as well as its case.

Cleaning BTE Hearing Aids

When cleaning behind-the-ear hearing aids, follow these steps:

– Check the device for debris and remove visible grime with a dry cloth or a soft brush.

– Remove the entire earmold from the hook to clean it. Some earmolds, especially the ones that are made with soft material, can get stained over time. Wiping them every day and soaking them in warm, soapy water at least once a week will help. Make sure to dry these molds every day. Don’t use chemicals or alcohol to clean them. BTE hearing aids could develop a slight odor with time. However, a strong odor may indicate that the wearer has an ear infection.

– Use a bulb blower in order to force water out of the tuning. Then, allow it to dry completely before using the hearing aid.
